I recall my father and I sitting on the front porch of our home in Petersburg, Va., the radio was on and we were listening to the news broadcast announcing   the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  I was six years old, and did not quite understand what this all meant. My father’s words soon thereafter, “One day we will have a black man as President. I will be long gone, but Nita, you will live to see it.” My father passed away in August 1984.

I never understood what those words would truly mean until this election.  I voted for the first time this election. For many reasons, I never felt my vote would make a difference. I thank God that my children are witnessing this historical moment in history and will be able to share with their children.

The Inauguration provides me with a feeling of connection. No more excuses. I believe for the future of our country, we each must make a commitment to change. President Barack Obama cannot do this alone.  When President Barack Obama places his hand on Abraham Lincoln's bible, the same bible that was used when President Thomas Jefferson, was inaugurated in 1801.  All Americans need to take an oath and commit to making a difference for our nation.

Proud to be an American,
