A NEW NATION
From Black El Paso Co-Publisher

To the readers of this great and growing publication, I say Happy New Year.  As we are moving into another new year and marking the celebration of one hundred years of a nation of people fighting for the equal rights of colored people, we see that the fight was not in vain.  We have gained a power as a nation and the courage of a race to not be afraid to stand strong for what our “Founding Fathers” sought out to achieve for our Nation, which is to stand as one with one voice.

On November 4, 2008, we finally came together as a nation and exercised our right to stand as one.  Now January 20, 2009, history is once again be called upon to make its mark in the archives of a country we the United State of America.

For now we can truly say that we have “United” as a nation and a people.  To see all the people of our Great Nation stand in front of our capital is our greatest accomplishment since the “March on Washington”.  This day truly honored the memories of our past leaders who fought for freedom of slavery, equal rights, and desegregation.  Harriett Tubman and Frederick Douglas would be proud to know that we made it this far.  Malcolm X and Dr. King would applaud and give a heartwarming smile.

I heard a speaker once say, “Rosa Parks sat on the bus so the Dr. King could march on Washington and Dr. King marched on Washington so that Obama could run for President.”  These words are so true, and I pray that we continue to “Let Freedom Ring” and that Dr. King’s dream continues to flourish.  As our generation grows, the plague of racism will peel away from our Nation like the skin of an onion, and our Nation will blossom like a beautiful rose garden filled with multiple colors, all sharing the same space and equally enjoying the rays of sunshine.

It is up to us to continue to move this Nation forward.  Although there will be many who will resist the “Change”; however, they cannot “Change” what has been written by the actions of our Nation.  We must finally realize that there is no “Black or White”, “Brown or Yellow”, “Blue eyes or Brown eyes”, and no “Democrats or Republicans” but a United Nation.  No longer can we make the excuse that opportunities are not available; yet, we should seek out those that do not immediately present themselves to us and strive for our own dreams always remembering that “Change” comes when least resisted.

Therefore, as our Nation continues to propel forward we should look into our community of El Paso to the Mr. Harold Howells (President of the El Paso Branch of the NAACP), the Mr. Donald L. Williams’ (Attorney at Law and President of the Black El Paso Democrats), the Terri Reeds (Director of the Women’s Boarder Business Center) and the Sandra E. Brahams, (Chairman of the YWCA El Paso del Norte Region) to provide guidance and mentorship for our growth as a community and city.  I could continue on with many in our community (regardless of race), but the list would exceed the message.  We as a community must get up, get out and back the voices and encourage the strengths of our local leaders, so that we may be removed from the bonds of self slavery within our minds and grow for the future of our city.

Barack Obama has set a new precedence for us to look upon and His-Story is definitely a series of short stories, which are our Nations history.
