RELIGION / FAITH & VALUES
The day was Sunday, June 15th at 7:30 p.m. What a fantastic way to jump start the 25th season of Music Under the Stars World Music Festival than with the awesome Harlem Gospel Choir from New York City. The air was filled with anticipation as the people crowded the Chamizal National Memorial park grounds. Family and friends gathered together to enjoy the joyful sounds of gospel music.
The event began with the musician playing a beautiful gospel piece roaring through the huge speaker. The Harlem Gospel Choir stepped out on center stage dressed in fashionable Kinta attire singing with full sound “Come down Oh Mighty King, We come to Praise thy Name”. The audience screamed and yelled with excitement.
The next song was a new and fresh rendition of R. Kelley’s “I Believe I can Fly.” As HGC sung a remix of “Man of Galilee” the audience was movin’ and groovin’ to the melody.
The old spiritual hymn “Nobody knows the Trouble I See” was sang in a soulful gospel style. Sis. B, with the most amazing voice, sang “Hallelujah”. People sitting or standing began to lift their hands worshipping the Almighty God.
As the musician played skillfully on the keyboard, like angels from heaven, the choir sang one of the great Praise and Worship songs, “Total Praise”. Oh what a joyful sound.
Sis. Kay Brown stepped up to the microphone and beautifully sang “Amazing Grace”. She testified how it was God’s Amazing Grace that caused her to become who she is today. The audience confirmed with a great shout. Afterward, the music changed to a jazzy sound and the choir began to sing this old spiritual hymn with a different flavor. Nice and smooth.
Before the choir took a 15 minute break, they broke out with an old-school up-beat gospel song “He’s Alright”. Hands were clapping; feet were stomping. It was church in the park.
The choir showed up and showed out!
