Groceries…at 50% off?
Just when you thought there was no way to save on groceries during the current economic crisis, a local church offers assistance to low income families, seniors or just anyone wanting to save money on food. Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church is the host site in El Paso for the Angel Food Network, a non-profit organization that is based in Georgia. The organization, which began in 1994, was started by Pastors Joe and Linda Wingo of Monroe, Georgia. Though some across the country have questioned the purpose of the AFN, they continue to be the leaders in providing food at an affordable price to families who would otherwise not be able to afford a large quantity of food.
Run entirely by volunteers, the program offers food boxes at approximately $30 each to feed a family of four for a week. Nathaniel Austin, Pastor of the local host site, says they will serve El Paso, Las Cruces and other neighboring cities to include Fabens, Chaparral and others. There are no specific qualifying guidelines for the program and no limit to the amount of boxes to be purchased.
According to the organization’s website, the food is “restaurant grade” meats, dairy products, frozen vegetables, fruits and more. They say the food is not “day old” type of products. Specialty boxes are also available and include steak, chicken, pork and other food.
Purchases must be made in advance and may be paid using cash, credit or food stamps. Transportation to assist with delivery in remote areas is currently being arranged, but orders may be placed online as well.
Menus change each month.
Food is distributed the 4th Saturday of each month.
Though boxes must be purchased before delivery, some families say it’s worth it because of the quality of food and the savings.
One dollar per unit is donated to the church’s benevolent fund, once their site is approved.
